As long as AI is involved in any part of the game, it may be labeled as an AI game.
Because of this broad definition, the internet is now filled with many confusing “AI games.”But does a game really deserve to be called an AI game just because AI is involved?
For example, if I play against an AI opponent on TwoSheep, does that automatically make it an AI game?
In this article, I will explain step by step: What is an AI-driven game? >> Where is the boundary between AI games and AI-driven games >> What is the difference between AI-driven games and traditional games
What Is an AI-Driven Game?
An AI-driven game is a game where AI directly forms the gameplay itself.
AI interacts with the player in real time and judges outcomes, success, or failure based on the player’s actions.
This is very different from games where AI is only used to pre-write story paths or dialogue, and players can only choose from fixed options.
AI-driven games are real-time and responsive, much like talking to a chat assistant. The AI understands context, reacts to player input, and adjusts its responses during the game.
Example: Human or Not
Human or Not is a well-known AI-driven game.
In this game, AI is the core feature, not a background system.
The AI imitates human behavior and chats with the player for 60 seconds.
During the conversation, the player must find clues and decide whether the opponent is a real human or an AI.
Key AI Features of This Game
Human vs AI interaction
The game turns the Turing Test into a playable experience, challenging players to identify whether they are talking to a human or an AI.
AI behavior simulation
By comparing different large language models in conversation, players can observe how close AI has come to human-like communication.
Data collection and feedback
Chat content may be used to improve and train AI models.
The Boundary Between AI Games and AI-Driven Games
The difference between an AI game and an AI-driven game is actually very simple.
You only need to ask one question:
If AI is removed, will the core gameplay still work?
- If removing AI breaks the core gameplay, then it is clearly an AI-driven game.
- If removing AI does not affect the core gameplay, then it is likely just an AI game.
In short:
- AI game: the game uses AI
- AI-driven game: the game exists because of AI
AI-Driven Games vs Traditional Games
Traditional Games: “Humans Write the Rules, Players Solve the Rules”
Example: Time Shooter 2
Time Shooter 2 is a time-freeze shooting game with a clear and fixed design.
During development, the rules, levels, NPC behavior, and gameplay flow were all decided in advance.
Both the player and NPCs act within predefined boundaries.
Players can only progress along designed paths, and after finishing a level once, the general flow is already known.
This often reduces the desire to replay.
All possible outcomes are decided during development.
Players simply explore and master these predefined systems.
This is what "humans write the rules, players solve the rules" means.
AI-Driven Games: “Humans Set the Boundaries, AI Decides What Happens”
Example: Death by AI
Death by AI is a new type of AI-driven game with a survival party theme.
The AI generates a scenario, and players must use creativity to respond.
Will you work with the AI or fight against it?
Will you survive or die?
This is the biggest feature of AI-driven games.
Both player behavior and in-game responses are generated in real time.
You never know what will happen next, even if you make the same choice again.
That sense of unpredictability keeps the game fresh and replayable.
The developer only defines what players are allowed to do.
The AI decides what happens after the player acts.
This is what "Humans set the boundaries, AI decides what happens."
